Exercising is one of the keys to aging gracefully. However, many older people have injuries, illnesses or disabilities that make exercising more difficult. The good news is that there are several exercises that are very easy on the body. Here are five exercises that are ideal for elders.

Walking

Walking is one of the best exercises for people of all ages. It is very gentle on the body but still very effective. Walking also does not require the use of exercise equipment. The only thing that you need is a good pair of walking shoes or arch support shoes. Additionally, you can very easily squeeze walking into your day.

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics is often recommended for seniors and people who have plantar fasciitis. Water helps reduce the stress on the body’s joints. It is also a form of resistance. Therefore, if you perform water aerobics, then you will be able to get a cardiovascular and resistance workout at the same time.

Cycling

Even though cycling does not seem like a low-impact exercise, it puts a lot less stress on your body than many other exercises. Cycling has also been shown to be effective for alleviating arthritis pain. If you have neck, back or shoulder problems, then you may want to consider investing in a recumbent bicycle. You will be able to sit back while you pedal if you have a recumbent bicycle.

Swimming

Swimming is one of the best exercises for people of all ages. It is not only low-impact, but it also helps improve flexibility and endurance. Because the water helps take the stress off of the joints, the chances of getting injured while swimming are lower than with many other forms of exercise. It is very important for you to make sure that you stay hydrated while you are swimming. Many people forget to drink water while they are swimming.

Tai Chi

Tai chi is an exercise that combines self-defense movements and meditation. This exercise is great for older people because it helps improve balance. Improving your balance will help reduce your chances of suffering a fall. Falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death among older people. Tai Chi also helps you relax.

Getting older does not mean that you have to give up your exercise routine. Swimming, tai chi, water aerobics, walking and cycling are all gentle on your body, but they are very effective.
