On your first visit to our office, you can expect to spend approximately 45 min. to 1 hour with Dr. Urban. Upon arrival, you will be asked to fill out our “initial visit forms” with details regarding your health history. Please note, our initial visit forms can be downloaded from the “contact” page. This saves valuable time when you have these forms filled out in advance. If you do not have a printer at home, we ask that you arrive 10-15 minutes early to your appointment to complete the forms in our office. After the forms are completed, you will watch a short video that gives you a brief introduction to chiropractic care and our office procedures. This information will show the many benefits from chiropractic care that go way beyond the obvious neck and back pain.
When you meet Dr. Urban, he will discuss all your health concerns with you to help determine the best course of care. Next, Dr. Urban will perform two different skin temperature tests. The first is using the “Tytron Thermography”. This instrument records temperature readings on both sides of the spine. Dr Urban is looking for asymmetries that show up as specific patterns along the spine demonstrating nerve irritation. The second instrument is called a “Nervoscope”. The nervoscope detects temperature changes as well but now pinpoints the particular area/areas that likely indicate where the nerve is being irritated. Both instruments are non-invasive and glide gently down the length of your back like two fingers sliding down each side of your spine.
Now, Dr. Urban will feel for the presence of swelling, tenderness and any abnormal texture or tightness in the muscles and other tissues of your back (static palpation). He is also feeling for motion in the spine while moving and bending you (motion palpation) to determine how easily/difficult each segment in your spine is moving in different directions. He is also visually looking for subtle changes in your posture or gait that may indicate a problem as well.
Next, we’ll take an x-ray (if appropriate). “Maui Imaging” in Kahului (just across the street in triangle square) takes all of Dr. Urban’s x-rays. The x-rays help Dr. Urban complete a thorough analysis of your spine.
Note: Maui Imaging does accept most insurances and will bill out if appropriate. Cash discounts are available as well.
The x-rays in the “Gonstead System”, aside from pathology, are used to determine the best way to adjust a segment SPECIFICALLY e.g., which side of the joint to contact and thrust on and which side to stabilize, the best line-of-drive and thrust mechanism to make a specific correction. The goal is to restore FUNCTION, not necessarily straighten misalignments that may be normal for that individual
After taking the necessary time to analyze your x-rays, Dr. Urban is ready to deliver your first specific spinal adjustment. The gonstead system was designed to be as specific and precise as possible! Great care is taken to adjust only that which is needed with the most accuracy and finesse as possible.
Lastly, Dr. Urban will schedule your second visit to discuss his findings regarding your condition and determine a course of care.
**Dr. Urban enjoys working with difficult/extreme cases, especially where people have given up hope!
Upon returning for your second visit, Dr. Urban will review your x-ray findings, answer any additional questions you may have and discuss your current health care goals. The visit will generally take about 30 minutes. A treatment plan with follow-up visits will be determined based on your goals and the outcome you desire.
Dr. Urban offers several pre-payment plans that are both cost-effective and convenient to help assist in meeting your health care goals. If you have insurance and seek reimbursement, Dr. Urban will provide you with the necessary documentation for you to seek reimbursement on your own.
Dr. Urban understands the financial commitment that is sometimes required to reach the level of health care that you may desire. So, often times he is willing to go out of his way to help you achieve this.
Now that you and Dr. Urban have determined an appropriate course of care to help meet your health goals, follow-up visits are necessary/appropriate to effectively monitor your care. Follow-up visits are fairly quick, only taking a few minutes. So, your wait times are generally at a minimum.
Also, you can schedule your visits online without having to call our office. Patients often comment how easy and convenient it is to schedule online…just give it a try! To get the times you desire, be sure to schedule far enough in advance!
The number and frequency of adjustments vary from patient to patient. Everyone responds differently! There are many factors to consider when determining how long it will take for you to get well:
- How long you have had your problem and the degree to which it has progressed.
- Your current state of health/vitality
- The ability of your doctor to properly analyze your case and make the correct adjustment.
- The time you allow your body to recover
Subluxations of the spine rarely get better on their own. Follow the course of care that you and Dr. Urban have set up and stay consistent…consistency along with specific adjustments by Dr. Urban will help you get the results that you seek.
Just like brushing and flossing your teeth, eating nutritious foods or working out at the gym. Maintaining the integrity of your spine and nervous system makes good sense!
